What Conditions Can Be Diagnosed Using a Gastroscopy?

Dionne Morrish • Apr 08, 2022

If your doctor has recommended that you undergo a gastroscopy, you may be wondering what the exact purpose of this procedure may be. The truth is a gastroscopy is an imperative way to diagnose problems of the upper digestive system.

Using a gastroscopy, your doctor can diagnose and treat problems associated with your oesophagus, duodenum, stomach, and upper intestine. But what does it entail? During a gastroscopy, a thin, flexible tube is inserted into the mouth and guided down into your oesophagus, stomach, and small intestine. The tube then dilates the oesophagus to allow for better visibility and access to the upper part of the digestive system.

The tube has a small camera attached to the end which allows the Gastroenterologist to view the upper section of the digestive system. The Gastroenterologist can also take a small tissue sample for biopsy and remove any polyps or abnormal growths they see during the procedure.

What problems can a gastroscopy detect?

Here a list of the common health issues a gastroscopy can help a doctor diagnose:

  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease
  • Celiac disease
  • Ulcers
  • Oesophageal cancer
  • Gastritis
  • Barrett's oesophagus
  • Portal hypertension
  • Stomach cancer

When will a gastroscopy be recommended?

A gastroscopy might be recommended to investigate many symptoms, including:

  • Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia)
  • Tummy pain that does not go away or keeps coming back
  • Experiencing constant/reoccurring diarrhoea
  • Feeling or being sick often
  • Losing weight without trying (unintentional weight loss)
  • Having heartburn or indigestion often
  • Blood in your poo
