X-Rays

What is an X-ray?

An X-ray is a commonly used test which creates an image of the inside the body, much like a photograph. It is often the first point of investigation to help the referring doctor decide if any other forms of imaging or tests are required. An X-ray is a very quick test.

Your appointment letter will give you all the information you need which is specific to the test you are having. Please make sure you read the information in your letter carefully before you come to hospital.

Are there any risks?

Although X-rays are a type of radiation the dose of radiation used is very low and is very similar to other sources of natural radiation that people are exposed to on a daily basis, without even realising it. Our radiographer will ensure that any dose of ionising radiation is kept as low as possible and that the benefits of having the X-ray are not counteracted by any risks.

Giving your consent?

Our radiographer will ask you if you are happy for the scan to go ahead. This is called verbal consent and may only involve the radiographer checking you are booked for the correct scan. If you do not wish to have the scan or are undecided, please tell the radiographer.

It is your decision and you can change your mind at any time. Please bear in mind that not having the scan may delay your diagnosis as your doctor may not have all of the information that they need. Please remember that you can ask the radiographer any questions you have at any time before, during and after your scan.
