Ultrasound

What is an ultrasound scan?

An ultrasound scan uses high frequency sound waves to produce pictures of inside the body. It helps find the cause of your problem, and decide the best treatment options for you.

Giving your consent?

Our radiographer will ask you if you are happy for the scan to go ahead. This is called verbal consent and may only involve the radiographer checking you are booked for the correct scan. If you do not wish to have the scan or are undecided, please tell the radiographer.

It is your decision and you can change your mind at any time. Please bear in mind that not having the scan may delay your diagnosis as your doctor may not have all of the information that they need. Please remember that you can ask the radiographer any questions you have at any time before, during and after your scan.

What happens during an ultrasound?

Our sonographer or radiologist will ask you to lie on a couch. He or she will apply gel to the area of your body that is going to be examined so that the sound waves can be transmitted through the body. He or she will then move a small scanning instrument (transducer) over this area. You will be able to see the scan images on the screen.

You should not feel any pain during the scan. If you find it difficult or uncomfortable, please tell the sonographer.

An ultrasound scan usually takes 10 - 20 minutes, depending on the area of the body that is being scanned.

What happens after an ultrasound?

In the majority of cases, you will be allowed to go straight home.

The results will be sent to the doctor who referred you.
